Horse head portrait: How to take the perfect photo

Pferdekopf-Portrait: So gelingt das perfekte Foto

KI-generierte Darstellung (Symbolbild)

Our horse head portrait makes your brush a one-of-a-kind piece: We engrave the silhouette of your horse – including its individual markings such as a blaze, star, or snip – onto your favorite item. For the portrait to truly look like your horse, a good reference photo is essential. Here, we show you how to get it right.

The most important thing: Photograph from the front

The horse's head must be visible from the front in the picture. This is the only way we can accurately transfer your horse's head shape and markings into the engraving. Stand directly in front of your horse so that both ears, both eyes, and the nostrils are clearly and evenly visible.

How to get the perfect shot

  • At eye level: Squat down slightly or hold the camera at the height of the horse's head – do not photograph from above or below.
  • Head straight: The horse should be looking directly into the camera without turning or tilting its head.
  • Ears pricked: A short sound or a treat will help your horse look forward attentively.
  • Use daylight: Photograph outdoors in even lighting. Avoid harsh shadows on the face and backlighting.
  • Clean background: The more clearly the head stands out from the background, the better we can recognize the contour.
  • Sharp and close: The head should fill as much of the frame as possible and be in sharp focus – feel free to include the forelock if it's part of your horse's character.

What you should avoid

  • Side views or semi-profiles – a frontal portrait cannot be derived from these.
  • Lead ropes, hands, or fences in front of the face.
  • Blurry, dark, or heavily filtered images.

What the result looks like

Your photo is turned into a fine engraving that displays your horse's silhouette and markings – shown here, for example, on our mane brush:

Unsure if your photo is suitable? Feel free to contact us – we review every image before engraving and will let you know if we need a better shot.
